Fairy Dart Dream

This morning between the time when Jeff left for work and when my alarm went off, I fell into one of those sudden and intense dream-states — during which I dreamt that I woke up to find three fairy darts piercing my left big toe. The toe ached like crazy and felt slightly swollen. The darts were long, thin and black, looking very much like porcupine quills except much thinner, and when I went to try to pull them out, they snapped and disintegrated into dust, leaving their barbed points lodged beneath my skin.

On careful examination, I could see the broken-off shafts of the fairy darts where they were stuck in the rough skin of my toe (which, for some reason, was incredibly large and hairy like a hobbit's). They looked somewhat like clogged pores, and my mother insisted that these were not fairy darts at all (what a stupid notion!) but some kind of strange disease wherein my toe was actually rotting from the inside and exuding the black, putrid flesh out through my pores. She gave me a pamphlet that she'd downloaded from the internet, which listed the symptoms of this disease (which, if you had visible symptoms, was already too far advanced to cure). The list of symptoms consisted of a series of nonsense words (among which were definitely the repeated words "amme" and "zoot") arranged in lines of verse, and I suddenly had the suspicion that they were a kind of chant or spell that could bring on the disease if read out loud.

At that point, my alarm clock went off and woke me. My left big toe was aching and continued to ache for about an hour after I got up.

I fear that this does not bode well.
